At first sight, this factory would appear to be practically a duplicate of the Alanfam or Promase factories, but it is more than that. It is a copy of the very concept of copying the Alanfam factory! The Kissi sugar syrup factory was built and is now run by the same production manager who was hired in 1979 on a temporary basis by the retired army colonel in Agomeda. While working on the Agomeda factory, he realized the possibility of replicating such a plant in a sugarcane area. Borrowing some capital from a local business woman, he began construction of a sugar syrup factory once again—this time for himself. He chose a site 50 miles west of Alanfam Limited (Mankessim) in the town of Kissi, which is only three miles from the second large government sugar mill, Komenda. Because of the problems faced by the Komenda mill, many sugarcane farms had remained unharvested for two to three years. In 1981 the factory was completed. As in the case of the mill at Agomeda, 20 to 25 jobs were created and a new, urgently needed market for the sugarcane of local farmers was established.

The early years of developing and refining the Technoserve sugar syrup technology at the Promase and Alanfam factories in Ghana were not easy. There were times when it seemed useless to persevere. But by 1981, with the additional two mills actually established, a juice-crushing plant operating in Mankessim, and who knows how many more in the planning stage, the mammy wagon’s encouragement to persevere had come true —“Good never lost.”
